From Michael to Michaela He has been trapped in the wrong body his whole life. But now the nightmare is finally over. Michael went with Destination Beauty to Thailand and became what he has always dreamt about – a woman. By Rikke Johansen

A big smile and a miniskirt. Michaela does not need to be hiding anything anymore. She is 25 years old, lives in London with her girlfriend and is finally complete as a woman. It took four years on hormone pills, a trip with Destination Beauty to Thailand and 15 days at the Yanhee International Hospital in Bangkok in February 2009 to make the transformation come true; A sex change from man to woman. “I feel so good. I look in the mirror and I finally look like me. I can’t even remember what I looked like before,” Michaela says.
More experience in Thailand It was actually possible for her to get the surgery for free in the UK, since she has been in hormone treatment and seen a gender psychiatrist for the past four years. However, she chose not too. She wanted to get her surgery done at the Yanhee International Hospital and pay 7500 US$ for the operation.

“I did not want to get it done for free in the UK. In my opinion the surgeons at home are not experienced as in Thailand. I heard of cases back home where the result wasn’t good. Also, the recovery period at the hospital at home is only seven days whereas I was in the hospital here for 15 days. To be honest, after seven days there was no way could get up from the hospital bed,” Michaela tells. She also knew the hospital in Bangkok very well because she went with Destination Beauty to Thailand two years ago. “I changed my face and my body, had my nose, cheeks, adam’s apple, jaw and breasts done. So I knew that it was safe to go out here again and I knew how experienced they are with transsexuals. Basically, I wanted to get it done the first time I went out here but I had to go home and save up some more money,” she says.
Alone and depressed Ever since Michaela was a seven years old boy named Michael, she knew she was very different. She didn’t fit in, played with girls’ toys and put on their clothes when no one was around. “I knew it wasn’t right and I was scared,” she remembers. It did not get better when she became a teenager. “I felt like I was trapped in the wrong body. I wanted to be a girl but didn’t know that sex changes existed and didn’t know anyone like me. I thought I was a freak and I was so sad and depressed. It helped when I found out on the internet that others felt like me. It was a relief because I knew it wasn’t just a phase I went through,” says Michaela. On the internet she started buying hormones. She also bought female clothing but didn’t wear it in public. The breakthrough came when she went to a gender psychiatrist at the age of 21. The psychiatrist immediately diagnosed her ‘translesbian’, a guy who also after the sex change still like women – not men. The doctor also subscribed hormone pills. “Just after my diagnose I started dressing only as a girl. I also told my family and they were absolutely shocked, especially my dad who could not accept me. I got kicked out of the house and my dad and I haven’t been in contact ever since.” But it is all in the past now. Michaela is finally ready to fly home to the UK – as a complete, new woman. “I was trapped in a cage. Now I’m free to do whatever I want. I can finally start living my life,” she says with a happy smile.
